What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic lashes of different lengths, curls, and width (thickness) in the shape of a natural lash. They are applied one-by-one to each individual natural lash as an "extension" of your natural lash. Lash extensions are meant to lengthen, thicken, and enhance the natural lash line without causing any pain, discomfort, or lash loss when applied properly.
How long does eyelash extensions usually take?
The lash extension application process can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours; depending on the fullness of your natural lashes. The normal human eye has approximately a range of 90-150 lashes per upper eye. The more lashes you have, the more extensions we will apply! This is a meticulous procedure that requires patience and concentration.

Therefore, it is important not to rush the process so that you can leave your appointment with a perfect set of lashes! You will be relaxing with your eyes closed, and you will feel no pain-- as this is a non-invasive procedure. Many of our clients are so relaxed that they often fall asleep!
How long does eyelash extensions last?
When applied properly, eyelash extensions will last the length of the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes. High-quality lash glue and a good application is the foundation for long-lasting eyelash extensions in addition to the way you take care of your lashes once applied. Everyone's experience will differ based on day to day activities, but overall, touch-ups are required every 2-3 weeks.
What should I do to prepare for my lash appointment?
-
Before your appointment, please remove all makeup/ mascara from the eye area with oil-free makeup remover products. Any residual makeup will prevent proper application of the extensions.
-
Do not apply face creams or sunblock in the eye area. The oil found in many cleansers and moisturizers prevents the eyelash adhesive from bonding to the natural eyelash and reduces the longevity of your eyelash extensions.
-
Please be sure to notify your lash technician of any allergies or sensitivity you may have to surgical tape, cyanoacrylate (compound found in all lash adhesives), arbutrin, and/or collagen products. Also, if you've had a history of dry eyes or Sjorgen’s Syndrome, chemotherapy, or any other tear duct infections and/or medical conditions which would prohibit or compromise placement and retention of eyelash extensions, please let your lash technician know.
-
If you've had an eye infection such as a stye or pink- eye within 2 weeks prior to your appointment, service will NOT be provided.
-
For proper retention, your lashes should be in the most natural and healthy state as possible prior to your lash extension application. Please do not curl your eyelashes, or use any other manipulation (apply false lashes, etc.) prior to your appointment.
-
To avoid discomfort, contact lenses must be taken out prior to your procedure. Your service could take up to 1+ hour(s) and you will have your eyes closed the whole time.
How can I ensure retention and extend the life of my eyelash extensions?
Be sure to take care of your lashes after your appointment!
-
Do NOT get your lashes wet for the first 24 hours! No direct water pressure on your lashes when in the shower.
-
Gently cleanse and brush your lashes/ eyelids daily.
-
Avoid excessive amounts of extreme heat such as steam rooms and saunas if possible. Excess heat and moisture can weaken the lash glue.
-
Do NOT use oil-based eye products or creams.
-
NEVER use waterproof mascara or an eyelash curler.
-
Avoid pulling extensions or rubbing eyes after application.
-
Please see myself or a trained lash technician to have your extensions removed, if needed.
-
Be sure to schedule your lash fill every 2-3 weeks if possible.
Can I swim, shower, exercise, or visit a spa while wearing eyelash extensions?
Yes! the bonding agent we use at KV Minks is waterproof and allows you to shower, swim, exercise, etc. Special care is needed but overall maintenance is low. We do recommend however that you do not wash your eye area for at least 24 hours after the eyelash application.
Why are my lash extensions falling out?
-
Natural lash shed. Naturally, your lashes shed and are replaced with a new younger lash. You will lose up to one or more of your natural lashes every single day. This is totally normal and natural. During Spring and warmer months, our body naturally shed its unwanted hair which also includes our lashes!
-
Getting your lashes wet too soon. If you notice your new lashes are flaking off, there's a good chance something has interfered with the adhesive bond. Avoid getting your lashes wet for the first 24 – 48 hours, as water can weaken the glue before it has the chance to set. Within the first 24 hours of applying your eyelash extensions, the glue is still curing. If you do get your new extensions wet, they can crystallize and cause irritation, which leads to harmful eye rubbing. After they have fully dried, you are free to swim and workout as usual.
-
Using mascara and waterproof makeup/ oil-based products. Mascara can break down the bonds in the adhesive of the extensions. One of the many benefits of lash extensions is not having to apply mascara. If you insist on wearing mascara, make sure to apply it only to the middle of the lash and down to the tip. Waterproof mascara is hard to remove, and you can actually end up tugging the extension out of place when removing. Oily products can break down the adhesive of your extension.
-
Oily skin. Having oily skin can cause problems for lash extensions. Similiar to using oil-based skin products, overly oily skin can break down the glue adhesive; causing difficulties for your KV Mink extensions to stick.
-
Picking/ rubbing your lash extensions. Sometimes, you just can’t prevent yourself from rubbing your eyes, but excessive rubbing or picking at the extension can loosen the adhesive and cause the extension to fall out-- eventually causing the loss of your natural lashes as well. With that being said, so try not to pick or rub your extensions as much as possible!
-
Sleeping style. Sleeping your your face (stomach) and smashing your face into your pillow each night can cause your extensions to bend or rub against the adhesive. The best way to fall asleep with eyelash extensions is on your back. Another option would be sleeping with a silk eye mask, or possibly sleeping on your side depending on your comfort level.
-
Failure to clean and take care of your lashes. If you don’t remove dirt, oil, or debris, you might end up losing the extension. Failure to clean your extensions can invite infection or inflammation in the hair follicle. Brushing your extension is also important. You should brush your lashes with a spoolie or lash brush twice per day. Make sure to use gentle strokes when brushing. PLEASE follow the aftercare instructions provided after your appointment to ensure retention and prevent your lashes from falling out quickly!
There are several other factors that plays a part in determining lash shedding; such as lash simulators (products that speed up the growth cycle of your natural lashes), technician error, medications, and vitamins. However, you want to make sure you are taking care and maintaining your lashes. After all, you just invested time and money for your extensions, and they are a luxury service & should be treated as such.

How do I apply my KV Minks lash strips?
-
Curl and/or apply mascara to your natural lash.
-
Carefully remove one lash from lash tray using tweezers.
-
Hold the lash strip against your eyelid and measure/ trim lash if needed (if band is too wide). Bending the lash in a "U" shape mirroring your eye shape can further determine if additional trimming is needed. This will also help the last strip to blend in naturally with your natural lash as well.
-
Apply lash adhesive along lash band and allow glue to sit on lash band until glue becomes tacky.
-
Use tweezers, eyelash applicator, or hands to place lashes as close to your natural lash line as possible, (start from center, then inner, then outer side), and hold lash until secure.
-
Apply eyeliner to fill in any gaps between lash line and lash strip.
-
Repeat for opposite lash.
-
Apply a light layer of mascara to each lash to blend natural lashes to lash strip.
-
After wearing your KV Minks lash strips, remove visible glue residue from lash strip with tweezers & store your lashes in its original packaging to preserve its shape and integrity.
